A Guest Post by Harriet Michael
“Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.”
This is how the New American Standard Bible describes a timely word in Proverbs 25:11. Such beautiful imagery. The Holman translation says these words are “apples of gold on a silver tray. “
When I think of timely words, I think of devotional writing. That’s what devotions are meant to be, after all—timely words that prick hearts and remind people of some aspect of a Biblical truth. God is so amazing in how He works! He gives these words to a writer and then uses them again in a devotional magazine, newsletter, or online site at just the right moment in the lives of readers.
I have been writing devotions since 2009. Though I write other types of pieces and even books, devotions are some of my favorite things to write. And how rewarding to hear back from a reader sharing how the words God gave me had impacted his or her life too! Often they tell me how the words I wrote were read by them at just the exact time they needed them.
All Christians have moments when God gives them specific insights or teaches them certain lessons. As writers, we can write these down, put them in a devotional format and touch others with our words … if we know how, that is.
This is what I will teach in my workshop on devotional writing and marketing. I hope you will join me. Together we will learn how to polish those apples of gold and serve them on that silver tray to readers eager to receive them.
